The Ministry of Education (MOE) formed the science and technology Advisor Office,with the first director being Dr. Chun-Tsung Wang (who is currently the chief auditor of IEET). Initiatives were undertaken by MOE to reform engineering and technology education, thus, shortly started curriculum reviews, which has been on-going up to the present time. Periodic modification of the review criteria were made over time to adapt to change in the local and global need to engineering and technology education.

During the National Engineering Education Conference (also known as Conference of Presidents and Deans of Engineering/Technology Universities and Institutes), a consensus on the idea of starting a new organization to coordinate and promote engineering and technology education was reached. A working team, headed by Dr. Yeong-Bin Yang, was established.

By the invitation of Dr. George Peterson, a Taiwan delegation led by Dr. Shan-Hwei Ou attended the Sixth Biennial Meeting of Washington Accord Signatories as observers. A statement was made to express the intention to take necessary actions in order to apply for Provisional Signatory Status in the Washington Accord in the near future.

The Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) was founded as an independent organization with accreditation of engineering and technology programs as the primary function. The first president elected was Dr. Che-Ho Wei.

During the International Conference on Engineering Education (initiated by Taiwan delegation in 1994 and now an international forum on engineering education), participants from Taiwan unanimously agreed that IEET is the organization responsible for accreditation of engineering and technology programs.

The MOE formally chartered IEET as the sole window for contact in issues related to accreditation of engineering and technology education programs.

IEET was admitted to the Washington Accord as a Provisional Signatory.

IEET received unanimous votes and was advanced to the Washington Accord as a Full Signatory.
